Customer
Aptean is a technology leader in business software for mid–sized enterprises in industry and wholesale trade. The company specializes in enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), and manufacturing execution systems (MES), catering to industries such as manufacturing, distribution, and financial services.
Challenge
As ERP systems age, businesses face challenges. These old systems often lack support. Companies evolve, requiring more customization. They hire developers for quick fixes, often creating undocumented solutions. Though the ERPs may still work, they rely on outdated technology, such as RPG. Now, companies face a choice: either a costly rebuild with the vendor, or an upgrade to a new technology.
Our solution
We worked on 10 ERP migrations for Aptean customers from diverse industries. We collaborated with the clients throughout the process, consulting with many end customers. Despite its complexity, our team had no problem understanding the legacy code, which we analyzed and migrated. We then created comprehensive frameworks based on Java 11.
Some clients already had a newer version of the ERP system, and because we had the client’s base version, we were able to customize it. We also implemented version changes and migrated the code.
Building a customized web and mobile app
For one end-customer, we built a fuel card system with the team of a liquid cargo company. We consolidated four dispersed systems into one unified platform for drivers to use when refueling. We built prototypes using an Agile approach, adding functionality for the customer to test and refine.
Results
We performed migrations from RPG to Java 11 for companies in manufacturing, telecommunications, industrial machinery, and other sectors. Our remote and in-person meetings deepened understanding, fostered trust, and strengthened relationships.
From the customer
VM.PL was willing to learn our framework and quickly immersed itself in our software and topics. We were able to use it in customer projects in a very short time, and the customer feedback showed us, as did the project team’s internal feedback, that the collaboration and the quality of the work were very satisfactory.
