Client

BMW, a global manufacturer of premium vehicles, develops connected car solutions that enhance safety, comfort, and remote vehicle-to-infrastructure communication capabilities.

Challenge

As part of the evolution of BMW’s vehicle electronic architecture, the company decided to develop a new Advanced Telematics Module that would serve as the vehicle’s central communication interface with the outside world.

The module was required to support both data transmission and voice communication while ensuring high reliability and compliance with international telecommunications standards.

The new telematics module had to simultaneously meet technical, functional, and regulatory requirements.

Key challenges included:

  • ensuring reliable data communication between the vehicle and OEM backend servers,
  • supporting voice calls to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) and customer service centers,
  • integrating with data exchange networks supporting infotainment systems and comfort features,
  • equipping the module with a GNSS receiver compatible with GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo systems,
  • ensuring a high level of data transmission security,
  • guaranteeing stable operation across diverse environmental and network conditions.

The module was designed to become a key component of the vehicle architecture, responsible for diagnostic communication, eCall functionality, connected services, and precise positioning.

Solution

The team contributed to the development of a new Advanced Telematics Module responsible for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.

Our scope of work included:

1. Design and Integration of Communication Functions

We developed a solution enabling:

  • data transmission between the vehicle and the OEM backend,
  • support for voice calls, including emergency calls,
  • communication with customer service centers and support systems.

2. GNSS Systems Integration

The module was equipped with a GNSS receiver compatible with:

  • GPS
  • GLONASS
  • Galileo

This ensured precise and stable positioning required for navigation systems, location-based services, and safety functions.

3. Support for Infotainment and Diagnostics Systems

The solution enables:

  • real-time diagnostic data exchange,
  • software updates and communication with OEM infrastructure,
  • support for infotainment and comfort features,
  • secure data transmission between the vehicle and the manufacturer’s servers.

The module was designed as a scalable component of the vehicle’s electronic architecture, ready for integration with future generations of systems.

Results

The implementation of the Advanced Telematics Module enabled:

  • stable and secure data and voice communication between the vehicle and external systems,
  • integration with global satellite navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo),
  • real-time diagnostic data exchange with the OEM backend,
  • expanded infotainment and comfort system capabilities,
  • support for emergency calls in compliance with safety requirements,
  • establishment of a solid foundation for the development of connected car services.

The project contributed to enhancing vehicle safety, functionality, and digital integration within the manufacturer’s service ecosystem.
